Married in the Register Office by Certificate before Thos. Ward Registrar and Charles Burnaby Supt Registrar

Both made their mark

Witnesses: A E Allsop and John G Dimock

It seems that Elizabeth lied about her age, possibly so that she could marry without her parent's permission.

[John Dimock is shown on the 1881 census as a solicitor living in lodgings in East Retford. A E Allsop has not been traced].

This marriage has been chosen as the correct one for the following reasons: Frank Lowe recalled an Aunt Sarah and Uncle Edric in Mosborough. He thought Sarah was half-sister to his mother Mary Ellen. Edric's last name was Woodhead. He couldn't remember any more.

Edric Woodhead was traced in the 1881, 1891 and 1901 censuses. His marriage was found on FreeBMD - the only Edric. The potential spouses, listed on the same page, included Sarah Ann Walker.

Assuming from this that Elizabeth Wells may have married a Walker, I searched for the marriage. The only possibility was this one.

A search of the 1881 and 1891 censuses found the family. Elizabeth gave her birthplace as Whitwell, and a daughter called 'Sarah A' was born in 1883.
