Eckington, Renishaw, Mosbro' and District

The death took place on Tuesday of Joseph William Crisp, of The Mount, Eckington. Mr. Crisp, who was 41 years of age, was a miner, but ill-health had prevented him from following his occupation for the last 15 months. He was a native of Eckington and was unmarried. The funeral will take place on Sunday.

Herbert CRISP aged 34 years 1 month, of 44 Station Road Halfway nr Sheffield, a Grocer's Manager.

He was unmarried, and had never previously served in the Armed Forces. He expressed no preference to join any particular branch of the services.

He was classed as medically fit for General Service

He was 5' 5" tall, and weighed 119 lbs, with a chest measurement of 32 -34.5". He had a scar on his right side. His physical development was satisfactory.

Next of kin was his mother, Sarah Ada Crisp of 91 High Street, Eckington nr Sheffield



His history sheet says that he was at home from 2 May 1917 to 1 October 1917, and joined the British Expeditionary Force on 2 October 1917. He embarked at Folkestone and disembarked at Boulogne before moving on to Etaples.

On 10 April 1918 he was shipped back to England.

He was in the Berrington War Hospital in Shrewsbury from 18 April to 4 July 1918

He was readmitted from 14 July to 20 July with Influenza

He was then posted to Ripon, and was in hospital there from 3 August to 22 October with Trench Fever, and then Influenza until 30 October. The Trench Fever was deemed cured on 19 November

He was demobilized on 10 April 1919

He later claimed for a war pension, citing Rheumatism and Trench Fever







He was entitled to the British War and Victory medals.
