Burial | 16 February 1924 | He was buried on 16 February 1924 in Millom, CumberlandG. Feb 16th 1924 The Times Deaths On the 13th Feb 1924, Horace the dearly loved husband of Clara Barlow-Massicks of The Friary, Tickhill, Yorkshire, aged 66 years. Interment Millom, Cumberland, today (Saturday) From the Whitehaven News 21st February 1924: Death Of Mr. H. Barlow Massicks Millom Associations The late Mr. Horace Barlow Massicks, who was interred in the family vault at St. George's Church, Millom, on Saturday, was for many a years one of the best known and most highly respected inhabitants of the district. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Barlow Massicks. Mr. Massicks, Sen., who lived for some time at Whitehaven, was managing director of the late Cumberland Iron Mining and Smelting Company, and was subsequently managing director of the Millom and Askam Hematite Iron Company. Deceased was furnace manager at Millom Ironworks until he left Millom in March 1893. He was actively associated with practically every sphere of public life appertaining to the town and district of Millom. He was superintendent of St. George's Church. His father was one of the chief movers in having that church built. Deceased was chairman of the Millom School Board and a member of the local Board of Guardians, and captain of the local Volunteers. To him, the Millom Rugby Union Football Club, of which he was president and for some time a playing member owed much of its success. Cricket and other sports also claimed a good deal of Mr. Massicks attention. Those who knew him well in those days still speak of him as one of the most genial men they ever met, and one-who was generous and kind almost to a fault. While in Millom Mr. Massicks resided at Duddon Villa. He married a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Steel, of the firm Steel, Peech and Tozer, of Sheffield, one of the largest steel firms in England. Mr. Massicks associated himself with that firm when he left Millom, and remained with them until he died at Rotherham on Wednesday week, after a short illness. The body was brought to Millom by train for interment, being met at the railway station by mourners and friends, including representatives of various local authorities and industries. The funeral service in St. George's Church was conducted by the Rev. F. Pascoe and the Rev. J. Rowlands. The bearers were: Messers. J. Graham, J.P., H. J. Kirby, J.P., F. G. Mills, J.P., T. Cranke, F. Fox, W. S. Farren, and F. Tyson, all of these with the exception of Mr. F. G. Mills, being members of the staff of the Millom and Askam Hematite Iron Co. There were a large number of beautiful floral tributes. |

From The Home Front: Sheffield in the First World War by Scott Christopher Lomax: And for the adults there was plenty of entertainment at the city's theatres, but it was not all fun because fiction was mixed with sobering films showing the latest war news including the reality of the attacks on the coastal towns of Scarborough, Whitby and Hartlepool. An amateur dramatics performance was given at the Lyceum Theatre in aid of Belgian Refugees' Sheffield Fund, with a large audience although many seats were empty. The theatre also hosted the new play by Leslie Barlow-Massicks, a Rotherham writer, entitled 'The Bachelor's Defence League' and described as being 'a comedy of tomorrow' which was modern in its story and the outlook on life of its leading characters. |

Occupation | 1898 | In 1898 William Everard Pedley was working as an irrigation engineer in Jurupa Valley, California, USAG. The following account was found at http://www.rctlma.org/planning/content/areaplan/jurupa/content/jurupa_history_noflash.html Pedley History In 1903 or 1904 (accounts vary), the Union Pacific Railroad Company installed a switch and a railroad station near what is now the intersection of Limonite Street and Van Buren Boulevard, and called it Pedley, apparently in honor of William Everard Pedley. Pedley, an Englishman, had come to Riverside as manager of the San Jacinto Land Company, developers of part of the Sobrante de San Jacinto land grant. The company had branched out and had bought a large piece of Jurupa Rancho. The Riverside Daily Press, June 14, 1898, carried a small article headed “West Riverside” (the name in use at that time and later for land across the river from Riverside) announcing the sale of the Jurupa land to the San Jacinto Land Company, saying, “The company has chosen this property as it is in the frostless belt of this section, and will set out several hundred acres to orange and lemon trees”. When the subdivision map for the project was recorded on the following December 15, it was called Jurupa Heights (RC Map Bk. 3 pp.1-4). It probably should have been named Pedley from the beginning. The survey was made by Phillip Pedley and the map was filed by William Everard Pedley, the designer, builder, and highly-touted irrigation engineer of the irrigation system that was installed. The development was beautiful. Winding streets were graded and lined with rosebushes. Eucalyptus trees were planted as windbreaks to protect the young citrus trees. All went well until 1913, the year of the great freeze. In spite of being in the “frostless belt”, the beginning of the end began for Pedley citrus. There was also a well-founded rumor that the roots of the citrus trees had reached hardpan. The San Jacinto Land Company dispensed with Pedley’s services in about 1915 and soon disposed of the land. |
