Note | 29 October 1855 | A noted local athlete from the Sheffield Daily Telegraph, 30th October 1855: HYDE PARK Yesterday, Samuel Senior of Woodseats, and William Jarvis. of Grenoside, ran half a mile for £10. The race, in the neighbourhood where the candidates for pedestrian honours came from, had caused considerable excitement, and a pretty good sum was speculated on the result at evens. The start was by mutual consent, and without any dodging the men bounded away at a very good pace. Jarvis quickly fell in the rear, being evidently outpaced from the commencement; and Senior won easily by 20 yards. William Bage, of Wadsley-bridge, and George Staniforth, of Sheffield, also contended 100 yards, Staniforth receiving 7 yards start. The betting was 7 to 5 against Bage. A very even start was effected the first attempt; Bage gradually decreased the distance between him and his opponent, and won by a yard and a half. |
