In 1927 she spent a year in England at a Girls High School as an exchange teacher. Reports written by her peers and Head Teacher at the time are glowing. She was very popular and very much respected. (Even though a colonial!)
Marriage1940She married Ernest Henry Robert Evans in 1940 in New ZealandG.
Residence1940In 1940 Bertha Earl lived in Hawera, New ZealandG,
They lived above the bank in a very comfortable flat.
Residenceabout 1947About 1947 Bertha Earl lived in Auckland, New ZealandG,
In the late 1940's Ernest retired and Dorothy gave up teaching. They went to live in Paihia but found it too much behind the times! They decided to live in the home in St Heliers half owned by Dorothy. They would look after her mother.
Residenceabout 1952About 1952 Bertha Earl lived in Auckland, New ZealandG,
After Bessie died they sold the St Heliers home and built a home at Northcote on the north shore of Auckland.
Residence1960In 1960 Bertha Earl lived in Auckland, New ZealandG,
When Ernest died Dorothy sold that home and bought a unit at Kohimarama.
Noteabout 1980She became ill about 1980 at Kohimarama in Auckland, New ZealandG,
Unfortunately Dorothy had always had ear problems and as a very elderly person she became quite deaf. Nearing 100 years old she suffered from tinnitus and blamed the next-door neighbour for keeping on playing a record. The couple had to put up with her saying that the previous owner had left the record behind! Luckily she had compassionate neighbours whom she could phone to ask for any help e.g. shopping at the local dairy, hanging out and getting in her washing etc. They were too kind to object but it became a burden.
Note1995She became ill in 1995 at Kohimarama in Auckland, New ZealandG,
At age 100, her neighbours found her in the garden unconscious. She was taken to hospital where it was found that she had a kidney infection, which required attention. When she was ready to be discharged, she was persuaded to enter a retirement home to recuperate. She demanded many times to be taken home but it was not to be. The rest home caregivers thought very highly of her and she was always immaculately groomed.
Age21 December 2001A noteable birthday.
At the time of her 107th birthday the Department of Internal Affairs believed that Bertha was at that time, New Zealand's oldest living person.
Death10 May 2002She died on 10 May 2002 in Auckland, New ZealandG.
Will2002Her estate was settled in 2002 in Auckland, New ZealandG.
She left her unit to Mary and Ruth. The rest of her estate was to be divided equally between her surviving nieces and nephews - five of us. We're all extremely grateful!
