CONISTON MECHANICS' INSTITUTION

The above institution celebrated their first festival on Tuesday evening last, by assembling themselves and friends over a cup of tea - the reading room being beautifully fitted up and decorated for the occasion. The duties of the tea tables were most efficiently discharged by the following ladies, to whom the thanks of all present are due for their kindness and attention:-- Mrs Atkinson, Miss Atkinson, Mrs Redhead, Mrs M Millican, Miss A Bell, Miss Fleming, Miss Massicks. After tea the company adjourned to the boys' school-room, where they were pleasantly entertained by I Whitwell Esq. (of Kendal), who exhibited his beautiful collection of dioramic views. Messrs. Bywater and Romney contributed to the evening's amusement by exhibiting some interesting experiments in Chemistry. The interludes were pleasantly occupied by Coniston Glee Club - and the Coniston Band contributed their share - which added much to the evening's entertainment, the proceedings being prolonged until a late hour. A vote of thanks was tendered to Mr Whitwell, when the company retired, evidently well pleased with the proceedings.
