Marriage24 August 1856She married William Johnson on 24 August 1856 at St Mary's Church in Gateshead, DurhamG.
There is no marriage in the Chesterfield registration district which fits this couple. The only possibility is Sep 1856 Gateshead 10a 602. The certificate had been obtained, and reads:

Marriage solemnized at St. Marys Church in the Parish of Gateshead in the County of Durham

When Married: Aug 24th 1856

William Johnson 25 years Bachelor Labourer, of Charles Street Gateshead, the son of Richard Johnson, Labourer

Mary Rotherham 24 years Spinster, of Charles Street Gateshead, the daughter of William Rotherham, Cutler

Married in the Parish Church according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Established Church after Banns by S A Herbert, Curate

This marriage was solemnized between us: William Johnson, Mary Rotherham her mark

in the presence of us: William Ferry, George Lister

[The 1861 census shows that George Lister, then aged 66, was Sexton of St. Mary's. William Ferry has not been traced with certainty. In 1861 there were two men of that name in Gateshead: one was a Glass Bottle manufacturer and the other was a Shipwright].

While it seems strange that two people from Derbyshire should marry in Gateshead, the fact that Mary said that her father was a Cutler seems to confirm that this is the correct marriage. No other William Rotherham who had a daughter called Mary and an occupation similar to a Sickle Grinder has been found on earlier censuses.

Mary Jane JOHNSON Niece 7 Eckington Derbys

[This entry confirms that the information given on the marriage certificate of William's brother John Johnson, the father of Mary Jane, is wrong. William's father was called Richard on previous census entries and on William's marriage certificate. Therefore, John's father was Richard, and not Thomas as his marriage certificate states].
