from the Derbyshire Times, 2nd December 1865:

DRONFIELD, FATAL BOILER EXPLOSION

On Monday afternoon, an inquest was held at Dronfield, by Mr Busby, coroner for North Derbyshire, and a respectable jury, on the body of a little girl 5 years of age named Eliza Hannah Hague, who died on Friday last.

Hannah Hague, mother of the deceased child stated that she is the wife of Richard Hague, coal miner, late of Dronfield, now in America. The deceased had died on Friday from scalds received on the previous day by the explosion of a boiler at a colliery belonging to Henry Rangeley, Esq. The deceased was scalded on her face, arms, hands and extremities.

James Clarke, of Unstone, coal miner, said that on Thursday last between a quarter and half past 12 o'clock, he was in the drawing-engine-house at Mr Rangeley's colliery at Hallows' Lane, Dronfield. There are two engines - one drawing and the other pumping, and it was the boiler of the latter which exploded. The explosion occurred a little before half past 12 o'clock, and witness and a man named George Hancock ran to the spot. George Herrington the engine-tenter was just coming out of the cabin near the fire-hole. The deceased was standing close to the boiler and screaming. They were both much scalded. Witness picked deceased out from among the steam and she was taken home. Herrington was taken home in a wagon directly afterwards.

Wm. Jarvis engine-tenter, said that the boiler of the pumping engine began running at one of the seams on the 26th Oct. They knocked some of the old rivets out, and put some pins in to screw the plates together again. The boiler then held good for about a fortnight. It then leaked again, and witness told Mr James Yates, the manager. He looked at it and they then knocked some more old rivets out, and put some new ones in. That was on the 10th Nov. It then held good until the accident. The boiler was new about 6 to 8 months ago, but the water is very bad. It was witness's duty to look at the boiler and if he found anything wrong to report it. He cleaned it once a month. The plates were thicker when he cleaned it on the 26th October and 10th November, than when it burst. After the first leakage witness had the boiler emptied and inspected every week. The plates were originally half of an inch thick. The piece produced is from the thinnest part and not more than one sixteenth of an inch. I told the manager Mr Yates. I did not think the boiler fit to run any longer, the plates were getting so thin. He said he was not fit to run until mended by a boiler-maker. It was to have been mended last Saturday, the 25th Nov. The side of the boiler burst - the second plate over the fire. The safety valve was in working order. On the 26th November, I altered the safety valve so after coming to action at 15 lbs pressure on the square inch. At a quarter to 12 o'clock on the day of the accident the boiler was as full of water as it could work out.

By Mr Rangeley: I apprehended the danger.

James Yates, under-viewer deposed that Wm. Jarvis had charge of the boilers. He reported this one to witness on the 26th October, and the old rivets were replaced by new bolts by Carnelly the blacksmith. He said there were many rivets with their heads nearly eaten off, and the boiler had better be repaired by a boiler-maker, or a new one substituted. Witness told Mr Cartledge, the manager, and he said they must have a new one, but had better run that until the 25th Nov. On the 10th November, Jarvis again reported a leakage, and witness had it repaired by a blacksmith, and reported the matter to Mr Cartledge. When river-heads are eaten off, it is a proof the boiler is not safe. Mr Cartledge did not come up to look at the boiler. The boiler was firm on the day of the accident, with the steam pressure at eleven pounds. The drawing-engine boiler had only been in six months, and is corroding already.

John Cartledge, book keeper, deposed that in Mr Rangeley's absence, he received reports, and had this boiler reported to him. He ordered the repairs by the blacksmith, but did not go to the boiler as he did not understand them. Yates never reported the boiler is dangerous, witness did not say the boiler was to be run to the 25th November. It was intended to change the boiler on account of its defects.

Mr Rangeley stated that the boiler was reported to him as out of order. Carnelly, the blacksmith, said he had replaced the rivets which were eaten with screw bolts, but that the plates and bolt-heads were getting worn and it would be necessary before long to have the boiler repaired or have a new one. He did not apprehend any danger. The boilerplate produced is not safe - but witness could not say whether it ought to have been detected.

Verdict of "Accidental death" was returned.

The jury then consider their verdict, and found, "That the danger was apprehended from the deficient state of the boiler, but that the boiler was not represented to Mr Rangeley to be in a dangerous state, and that the child was accidentally killed".

Witness Role: Witness [I251] Hannah DAWSON.
Burial27 November 1865She was buried on 27 November 1865 in Dronfield, DerbyshireG.
Eliza Hannah HAGUE aged 5.
