Criminal | 29 September 1913 | He was before the Court on 29 September 1913 in Whitwell, DerbyshireG, from the Derbyshire Courier 7th October 1913: Neighbour's Folly GARDENS ROBBED AT WHITWELL Thefts of garden produce, which were afterwards keenly regretted, eventuated in Charles Bowskill, Fread Meakin and Joseph Jennings, colliers, of Whitwell, being summoned before the magistrates at Eckington on Monday for stealing a quantity of potatoes, cabbages, beetroot and celery, valued at 8s., the property of James Greaves, at Whitwell, on Sept. 20th. Defendants were further summoned for stealing onions, valued at 2s., the property of William Scott, at Whitwell, on the same date. The offences were admitted. Mr Greaves stated that the men had done 10s. worth of damage, in addition to the value of the produce. Mr Scott said the men had also done 5s. worth of extra damage in his garden. Bowskill said he had had a little drop of drink and did not know what he was doing. He was very sorry for what had been done. It was the first time he had ever been in a place like that, and he would take good care it was the last. The Clerk (Mr Howes Smith) reminded the defendants that they were liable to six months' imprisonment. Mr Greaves then went into the box and said that he did not wish to press the charges. The men were next-door neighbours and had wives and families. Defendants were ordered to pay 10s., and the damage, and the costs in each case. |
Note | 20 September 1919 | He was involved in an accident on 20 September 1919 in Barlborough, DerbyshireG. from the Derbyshire Courier, 27th September 1919: Whilst walking home on Saturday, Mr Charles Bowskill, of Barlbro' Common, was knocked down by a cyclist at the bottom of Hancock's Hill, and received severe injuries to his head and a fractured shoulder. The cyclist, who was on his way from Rossington to Barlow, was injured about the face. Mr Thomas Turner, of Barlbro', who was accompanying Mr Bowskill, rendered every assistance, and the latter was conveyed home and attended by Dr Magee. His condition is far from satisfactory. |
